You are building a ESXi VM for Messaging Gateway or OSRestoring a physical appliance with an ISO file.

Before you begin:

The current minimum specs for Messaging Gateway 10.6 and later.

  • ESXi 5.0 or later
  • HD 120GB (Fixed Disk, Recommended 200GB or higher)
  • RAM 8GB (Recommend 16)
  • CPU 4 (Recommend 8)
  • NICs 1 (Recommend 2)

Building a new VM for Messaging Gateway:

  1. Download the ISO from https://fileconnect.symantec.com (or mysupport.symantec.com)
  2. Save the file on your desktop or upload to the datastore.
  3. Click the ESXi Server on which you want to place your virtual machine.
  4. On the File menu, click New, then click Virtual Machine.
  5. Select the Typical option and click Next.
  6. Type a descriptive name for the virtual computer and click Next.
  7. Select a data store option (This setting is where your virtual computer is located on the physical disk) then click Next.
  8. For the OS, click "Linux" as the guest operating system and "CentOS 4/5/6/7 (64-bit)" as the version then click Next.
  9. Set the number of NICs. (The recommended configuration is 2)
  10. Reserve the necessary quantity of disk space, and then click Next. (See “System requirements for virtual deployment on VMware”)
(NOTE: After you reserve disk space and complete deployment, any changes to disk space require that you repeat the OS restore process)
  11. On the Ready to Complete page, check Edit the virtual machine settings before submitting and click Continue.
  12. Click Memory at the left. Reserve the system memory based on your deployment needs and then click Next. (See system requirements for virtual deployment on VMware)
  13. Click CPUs at the left. Select the number of virtual CPUs, and then click Next.
  14. Click New SCSI Controller at the left. Click Change. Select the LSI Logic SAS as the SCSI device. Click Ok.
  15. Click Finish.
  16. Right-click on the VM and select Power -> "Power On".
  17. Right click on the VM and select "Open Console"
  18. Mount the ISO to the virtual DVD drive using the connect DVD button.
  19. While clicked into the virtual console window, press CTRL-ALT-INSERT to reboot the VM and boot from the ISO.
  20. Follow the prompts in the virtual console to install SMG.
  21. When the installation is complete, the VM will reboot and you will be taken to a login prompt ready to begin the bootstrap process.

For a physical appliance install:

  1. Download the ISO from https://fileconnect.symantec.com (or mysupport.symantec.com)
  2. Burn the ISO to a DVD. (NOTE: Make sure to burn this ISO as a bootable image to the disk, not just storing the ISO as a file on the disk)
  3. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive and boot the appliance.
  4. When prompted, confirm you would like to install by clicking on the Yes button.
  5. When the installation is complete, the appliance will reboot and you will be taken to a login prompt ready to begin the bootstrap process.
