FAQ:  Licenses for Symantec Management Platform Based Products

  1. What has changed with respect to licenses for products based on the Symantec Management Platform?
    • Version 8.1 of products based on the Symantec Management Platform (hereinafter referred to as "SMP based products"), including IT Management Suite, support the use of either legacy Altiris licenses or SLic licenses.  Previous versions only supported the use of legacy Altiris licenses.
  2. What are the differences between legacy Altiris licenses and SLic licenses?
    • There are at least two important differences between legacy Altiris licenses and SLic licenses.  First, legacy Altiris licenses require separate license files for each solution/component within a suite.  SLic licenses support the use of a single license file for a suite.
    • Second, the SMP based products only support a single legacy Altiris license file per solution/component.  This means that customers with multiple legacy Altiris license files for an individual solution or component must combine the license files into a single license file.  By contrast, versions of the SMP based products beginning with 8.1 support the use of multiple SLic license files per suite or solution.
  3. Should I use SLic licenses?
    • Customers upgrading, migrating or doing a fresh installation of version 8.1 of the SMP based products are strongly encouraged to begin using SLic licenses, although version 8.1 of the SMP based products support either legacy Altiris licenses or SLic licenses.
    • Customers using version 8.1 of an SMP based product are encouraged to use SLic licenses for the reasons stated above.  In addition, future versions of the SMP based products will only support SLic licenses.
  4. If I am upgrading or migrating to version 8.1 of an SMP based product, how can I begin using SLic licenses?
    • Customers with licenses of an SMP based product with active maintenance as of April 3, 2017, will be provided with SLic license files that can be used when upgrading or migrating to version 8.1.
    • The SLic license files will be available in the Symantec License Portal.
    • After upgrading or migrating to version 8.1, customers can import their SLic license files using the Symantec Installation Manager.  Importing SLic licenses for a particular solution or component will result in the deletion of the corresponding legacy Altiris licenses.
  5. If I renew the maintenance on my SMP based product and will not be upgrading to version 8.1, will I continue to receive legacy Altiris license files?
    • If you renew your maintenance prior to October, 2017, and will not be upgrading to version until sometime thereafter, you will receive legacy Altiris licenses if you purchase a version 8.0 renewal.  The version 8.0 renewal SKUs will remain active on the Symantec price list until October, 2017.
    • If your order is mistakenly processed using a SKU for version 8.1 or later, you will receive SLic license files and will need to contact Symantec Customer Care to receive legacy Altiris licenses that can be used for versions of prior to 8.1.
    • If you renew your maintenance beginning in October, 2017, or thereafter, you will receive SLic license files by default.  Symantec Customer Care will also generate legacy Altiris license files that can be used in versions prior to 8.1.
  6. If I need to purchase additional licenses for my SMP based product and will not be upgrading to version 8.1, will I be able to receive legacy Altiris license files?
    • If you purchase additional licenses prior to April 3, 2018, and will not be upgrading to version 8.1 until sometime thereafter, you will receive legacy Altiris licenses if you purchase licenses using a version 8.0 license SKU.  The 8.0 license SKUs will remain active on the Symantec price list until April 3, 2018.
    • If your order is mistakenly processed using a SKU for version 8.1 or later, you will receive SLic license files and will need to contact Symantec Customer Care to receive legacy Altiris licenses that can be used for versions prior to 8.1.
    • If you purchase additional licenses on, or after, April 3, 2018,, you will receive SLic license files by default.  Symantec Customer Care will also be able to generate generate legacy Altiris license files upon request that can be used in versions prior to 8.1.
  7. Will I be able to use SLic licenses with versions of my SMP based product prior to 8.1?
    • Versions of the SMP based products prior to 8.1 do not support the use of SLic license files.  SLic license files cannot be imported when using versions prior to 8.1.
  8. Can I use a combination of legacy Altiris licenses and SLic licenses in version 8.1 of the SMP based products?
    • Version 8.1 of the SMP based products do not support the use of both legacy Altiris licenses and SLic licenses for an individual solution or component.  Import of a SLic license file will overwrite existing license files for that solution or component.
  9. Are there any changes in evaluation/trial licenses in version 8.1 of the SMP based products?
    • Versions prior to 8.1 were installed with a 7-day trial license.  Customers requiring an additional period for their evaluation were able to request an extended trial license of 30 days from within Symantec Installation Manager.
    • Versions beginning with 8.1 are installed with 30-day trial licenses.  Symantec Installation Manager no longer provides the ability to request extended trial licenses.
