How to uninstall Symantec Protection Engine from a Windows/Linux computer?

Resolution

To uninstall Symantec Protection Engine on Windows

  1.  Log on to the computer as administrator or as a user with administrator rights.
  2.  In the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel, click Symantec Protection Engine.
  3.  Click Remove.
  4.  Follow the instructions to complete the removal.

To uninstall Symantec Protection Engine on Linux

  1.  Log in to the computer as root.
  2.  At the command prompt, type the following command:
    rpm -e SYMCScan 

The uninstall of Symantec Protection Engine leaves files behind in the following location that can be removed if a clean removal is required:

  • Installation folder (default location)
    • Linux: /opt/SYMCScan
    • Windows: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Scan Engine
  • License files (default location)
    • Linux: /opt/Symantec/License
    • Windows: C:\ProgramData\Symantec Shared\Licenses

Additional Information

NOTE

  • When you uninstall Symantec Scan Engine, the license keys remain.
  • If you want to permanently uninstall symantec protection engine, you must manually uninstall the license files for symantec protection engine.
  • The location for these license files is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses.
    (When you uninstall Symantec protection engine, the keystore files also remain. This eliminates the need to re-import certificates if you uninstall and reinstall the product.)
