Issue/Introduction

You seek to confirm the currently installed version of motherboard, BIOS, iDRAC firmware, LifeCycle Controller firmware, and Identity Module for one of the following physical appliances:

  • SMG8340 - Symantec Messaging Gateway 8340
  • SMG8360 - Symantec Messaging Gateway 8360
  • SMG8380 - Symantec Messaging Gateway 8380
  • SWG8450 - Symantec Web Gateway 8450
  • SWG8490 - Symantec Web Gateway 8490
  • SATP:N8840 - Symantec Advanced Threat Protection: Network 8840
  • SATP:N8880 - Symantec Advanced Threat Protection: Network 8880

Resolution

To enumerate the motherboard, BIOS, iDRAC firmware, LifeCycle Controller firmware, and Identity Module within iDRAC7

  1. Within the iDRAC7 web interface, navigate to Overview> Server.
  2. On the Properties tab, click the System Properties sub-tab.
  3. Within the Hardware Properties section, click "Firmware Inventory"

"Integrated Remote Access Controller" is the DRAC or Firmware version.
    "BIOS" shows the BIOS version.
"Lifecycle Controller" shows the currently installed Firmware pack for the LifeCycle Controller.
"Identity Module" shows the currently installed Identity Module.

  4. Scroll up to Hardware Inventory.
  5. Within the Hardware Inventory section, scroll down to System.
  6. Click the plus (+) symbol beside System to expand the System sub-section.
  7. The last three digits of "BoardPartNumber" identify the version of the motherboard.
  8. Within the System subsection, scroll down to "Manufacturer".
  9. If "Manufacturer" contains "Symantec" and the icon on the upper left is the Symantec icon, a Symantec ID Module has been applied to the appliance.

To enumerate the motherboard, BIOS, iDRAC firmware, LifeCycle Controller firmware, and Identity Module within iDRAC6

  1. Within the iDRAC6 web interface, navigate to Overview> Server.
  2. On the Properties tab, click the System Properties sub-tab.
  3. Within the Hardware Properties section, click "Firmware Inventory"

"Integrated Remote Access Controller" is the DRAC or Firmware version.
    "
Dell Server BIOS 11G" shows the BIOS version.
"Dell Lifecycle Controller" shows the currently installed Firmware pack for the LifeCycle Controller.
Symantec Appliances with DRAC6 cards were released before Symantec began to use Identity Modules, so no Identity Module line appears.

  4. Scroll up to the bottom of Hardware Inventory.
  5. Within the Hardware Inventory section, scroll down to the Component "PSU.Slot.1".
  6. Follow the line to the right and locate "Part Number"... the last three digits of the part number correspond to the originally installed motherboard for the appliance.
  7. Scroll up to the top of Hardware Inventory, then locate "iDRAC.Embedded.1".
  8. Follow the "iDRAC.Embedded.1" line to the right to locate the currently installed Firmware Version of the iDRAC6.
  9. Symantec appliances with iDRAC6 do not have Symantec ID Modules to enumerate.

To identify motherboard, BIOS, iDRAC firmware, LifeCycle Controller firmware, and Identity Module within DSET

  1. Extract the contents of the DSET archive, then double click on the file dsetreport.hta
  2. Within the page that opens, on System > Main Chassis > FRU, on the "System Planar (BMC)" line, the motherboard version appears in the Revision column.
  3. On System > Main Chassis > Firmware, "BIOS" reports the BIOS version.
  4. On System > Main Chassis > Firmware, "BMC" reports the revision of the iDRAC firmware, sometimes known as the Backplane Management Controller.
  5. On System > Main Chassis > Firmware, "Dell OEM Unified Server Configurator" reports the version of LifeCycle Controller.

NOTE: The DSET utility does not typically detect the version of the Identity Module, if any.

To determine the motherboard and BIOS from dmidecode_output.txt from the diagnostics of an SMG appliance

  1. Extract the dmidecode_output.txt file from the diagnostics archive.
  2. Open the dmidecode_output.txt file within Wordpad.
  3. On the keyboard, press <CTRL>+<F> to open the Find dialog box.
  4. In the "Find what:" field, type: BIOS Information
  5. Click Find Next.
Wordpad highlights "BIOS Information", and the Version appears two lines below "BIOS Information"

  6. Delete the contents of the "Find what:" field, and then type: Base Board Information
  7. Click Find Next
Wordpad highlights "Base Board Information", and the Version appears two lines below "Base board Information"
