Problem

Altiris eXpress Server service fails to start and gives an error: "Error 1053. The service failed to start in a timely manner."

Environment
Deployment Server 6.9 all versions.

Cause
This is directly caused when upgrading from Deployment Server 6.8 to 6.9. The axengine service was renamed in the newer version from "Altiris Deployment Service" to "Altiris eXpress Service". When this happens often the old service remains active in the services and binds to port 1433. This causes the new service to be unable to start and the console to not work as a result.

Resolution
Stop and disable the older "Altiris Deployment Service" in the windows services then start the newer Altiris eXpress Service. It should now work accordingly.
