Management Platform (Formerly known as Notification Server)

Microsoft has changed the behavior of "Interactive Services" with the introduction of Windows Vista. How does the Notification Server (Symantec Management Platform) Agent work in such environments?

For Modern versions of windows (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2008), the NS agent will behave as follows:

1) The Agent does install (Either via the Push, Pull or Script mechanism)
2) The Agent UI shows up OK (it is its own separate process and will show up in the standard "windows session" that includes the rest of the user's applications)
3) When a task is sent down to these machines that requires user interaction, a message box pops-up that looks like this:

...The user can click on the View the message button and see the task in its own "Session".

4) After interacting with the task in its own Session, the user can return back to the main "windows session"

The process is the same for both the NS 6 and  SMP 7 agents. The only time tasks do NOT work is if the Interactive Services Detection Service is disabled. If the Interactive Services Detection service is disabled, “Interactive” pop-ups (shown above) will no longer appear. However,  Interactive Tasks (that require user attention) will NOT function. The Interactive Services Detection service needs to be set to either Enabled or Manual for interactive tasks to function correctly.

NOTE:: When you install the NS agent, you will see the following error in the System Event log viewer:

(The Altiris Agent service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly. Event ID: 7030)

The message pictured above is displayed when the NS agent is installed onto a Modern windows system. If you notice any issues with the NS Agent on a Modern Windows system (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2008), please contact support so we can troubleshoot the issue.
