Monitor Solution

In Monitor Solution 7, is it possible to monitor workstation / desktop class Windows machines?

Monitor Solution 7 supports Windows XP, Vista, and 7 workstations, though these operating systems are not included in the out-of-box configuration of the Solution. Modifications will need to be made to the Monitor Agent package(s), rollout policies, configuration policies, and Monitor Policies to include these workstation operating systems. Follow these steps to properly rollout the Monitor Agent to, and monitor, workstation class machines:

Monitor Agent Configuration

The default Monitor Agent configuration policy has a defined target which excludes machines which are not Windows servers. It is recommended to clone the existing configuration policy and apply it to a target which is specific for workstations. Using this method, you can maintain separate Monitor Agent configurations and standards between servers and workstations:

  1. In the Symantec Management Console, access:  Home > Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor > Agents/Plug-ins > Windows > Configuration
  2. Right-click the All Windows Servers configuration policy, choose Clone, in the Clone Item window enter All Windows Workstations for the name, and choose OK
  3. Remove the existing target from the new All Windows Workstations configuration policy, then choose Apply to > Computers
  4. In the Select computers window, choose Open, choose the Windows Servers with Monitor Agent installed target, and then OK
  5. For the first Filtering Rule in the target definition, replace Windows Servers with the Windows Workstations filter, choose Save as, enter Windows Workstations with Monitor Agent installed for the name, and then OK to save the target for future use, and then OK to apply this new target to the All Windows Workstations configuration policy

Note:  It is recommend to disable the Record process values every: setting under the Data Collection tab for the All Windows Workstations configuration policy

Monitor Policies

The default Monitor Policies also exclude workstations from their default target definitions. It is recommended to follow the same logic as outlined above for the Monitor Policies:  Clone the default policies (or create new ones), adjust the target definitions to be specific to workstations, and save those targets for future use with additional policies.

Installation / Rollout

If any non-server based operating system is detected during the rollout of the Monitor Agent, the installation will fail. To allow the Monitor Agent installation to succeed on a non-server class Windows machine, the NOWINDOWSCHECK parameter will need to be appended to the command line for the package:

  1. In the Symantec Management Console, access:  Manage >  All Resources > Software Command Line
  2. Double-click the Install the Monitor Windows Agent Package item to load the Resource Manager, then choose Edit Command Line
  3. Append the NOWINDOWSCHECK parameter to the existing Command line: field, then choose OK
Altiris_MonitorAgentPackage_7_0_x86.exe /s NOWINDOWSCHECK
  1. Repeat these steps for the Install the Monitor Windows Agent Package x64 package

The default rollout policies for the Windows Monitor Agent exclude workstations. It is recommended to clone the existing rollout policies and adjust the target definitions to include the desired workstations:

  1. In the Symantec Management Console, access:  Home Monitoring and Alerting > Monitor Agents/Plug-ins > Windows > Rollout
  2. Right-click the Monitor Agent for Windows x86 - Install policy, choose Clone, enter an appropriate name for the new rollout policy, and then OK
  3. Remove the existing target, apply the rollout policy to a new target which includes the desired workstations but excludes 64-bit machines, enable the policy, then choose Save changes
  4. Repeat these steps for the Monitor Agent for Windows x64 - Install policy
