Issue/Introduction

Symantec Scan Engine is unable to update definitions.

Symptoms
1. Definitions are not updated in Symantec Scan Engine console.

2. The following can be found in the Liveupdt.log file:

The location of Liveupdt.log is:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Java Liveupdate

Resolution

This is due to a Jave LiveUpdate unable to contact the Symantec LiveUpdate servers and this can be due to multiple reasons.

1. Verify by testing to resolve the following names:
(a) nslookup liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com
(b) nslookup liveupdate.symantec.com

2. Ping the server's IP address from the results of the nslookup to see if there is a reply

3. Telnet to the LiveUpdate servers using the specified port
(a) telnet liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com 80
(b) telnet liveupdate.symantec.com 80


If any of the tests fail, then it is most likely an environment/network issue or the firewall preventing Scan Engine from communicating with the Symantec LiveUpdate Servers
