Issue/Introduction

You have Symantec Scan Engine 5.2.4 or later installed on a 64-bit Windows server. You try to update Scan Engine using Intelligent Updater or Rapid Release definitions but they both fail to find a product to update.

You will get an error when using Rapid Release definitions from the Scan Engine's user interface saying the MD5 checksum failed. If you run Intelligent Updater x86 defintiions, you will be told the program is not x64 compatible and won't run. If you run the -i32 or -x64 definitions you will be told they could not find a product to update.

Cause

Scan Engine is not currently able to be updated using any manual downloading methods with additional parameters. LiveUpdate is the only way to automatically update virus definitions on a 64-bit operating system.

Resolution

Here is a workaround you can use:

  1. Enable setup-iu.bat, you do not have to modify it.
  2. Download Rapid Release defs from ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/symantec_antivirus_corp/rapidrelease/symrapidreleasedefsi32.exe
  3. Run, "symrapidreleasedefsi32.exe /EXTRACT /Q C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\CSAPIDefs"
  4. Give Scan Engine a minute or two then open the browser and confirm that the defs have been updated.
