Issue/Introduction

Error: SideBySide in event log when launching/installing the dissolvable/on-demand(active x) agent.

Symptoms
From windows event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SideBySide
Event ID: 58
Description: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Snac On-Demand Client\Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC.MANIFEST" on line 5.

Event Type: Error

Event ID: 34
Description: Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SideBySide
Event ID: 59
Description: Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Snac On-Demand Client\MFC80.DLL. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully.

Cause

This issue has been seen on XP SP3 machines. The "winver" command indicates Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 : Service Pack 3) and is associated with the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package.

Resolution

Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package:
