Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

Why do my violation statistics appear inconsistently in Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE)?

Symptoms

  • New violations are not added to statistics despite being quarantined successfully
  • Reports fail to generate, or the data within the reports does not make sense
  • Numbers on the homepage do not make sense

Cause

The database that SMSMSE is the Microsoft Access engine, which has a hard 2 gigabyte limit for databases. If the database exceeds this limit, behavior of all functions relying on this database becomes inconsistent.

Resolution

WARNING: Be aware that the following procedure will clear all existing report data and start from 0 as if the product had just been installed.

Replace the database with a default database:

  1. Download the zip file containing cmaf_db.mdb matching the installed SMSMSE version.
  2. Open the services console (Start -> Run -> services.msc) and stop the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Mail Security Utility services.
  3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Reports (Program files (x86) on 64 bit OS).
  4. Verify the size of the existing cmaf_db.mdb. If it is over 2GB, rename the file to cmaf_db.old
  5. Copy the new cmaf_db.mdb into the Reports folder.
  6. Start the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Mail Security Utility services.

All future violations should now display on the console homepage and in reports.
