Why is LiveUpdate failing with error code -536805375?

Symptoms
After clicking the LiveUpdate button on the client the following error is received:




Cause

LiveUpdate is either not installed or is corrupt.

Resolution

To resolve this issue follow the steps below:

  1. Uninstall LiveUpdate and Symantec Endpoint Protection

    • 2000/2003/XP
      1. Open the Control Panel
      2. Double-click on Add or Remove Programs
      3. Select the program you desire
      4. Click the Change/Remove button
      5. Follow the prompts

    • Vista/2008/7
      1. Open the Control Panel
      2. Double-click on Programs and Features
      3. Select the program you desire
      4. Click the Uninstall/Change button
      5. Follow the prompts

  2. Delete the following Symantec directories, if present:

    • 2000/2003/XP
      1. C:\Program Files\Symantec
      2. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
      3. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

    • Vista/2008/7
      1. C:\Program Files\Symantec
      2. C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\ (Vista)
      3. C:\Program Data\Symantec\ (Windows 2008, Windows 7)

  3. Reboot

  4. Install LiveUpdate

  5. Install Symantec Endpoint Protection
