Issue/Introduction

Under "Latest Definitions from Symantec" in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), you see "Information is Currently Unavailable" instead of the most recently published definitions.

Cause

This problem can be caused by one of the following:

  • Endpoint Protection Manager cannot connect to the Internet.
  • A proxy or firewall is preventing Endpoint Protection Manager from connecting to external Symantec web sites.
  • Internet Explorer (IE) Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled.

Resolution

Since this problem can have multiple causes, check each of the following:

Check Internet connectivity

Endpoint Protection Manager uses data downloaded from the Symantec Security Response web page to update the "Latest from Symantec" section on its home page. If you cannot connect to the Internet on the computer where Endpoint Protection Manager is installed, this section will not be updated.

Confirm proxy and firewall settings

If you are using a proxy server or firewall in your environment, ensure that Endpoint Protection Manager has free access to the following URLs:

  • http://securityresponse.symantec.com
  • http://liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com
  • http://liveupdate.symantec.com
  • ftp://update.symantec.com
  • *.symantec.com

Disable IE Enhanced Security Configuration

Refer to the Microsoft documentation for your operating system to determine how to disable IE Enhanced Security Configuration.

Check access to the securityresponse.symantec.com URL

At the Windows Command Prompt, run the command nslookup securityresponse.symantec.com. This should return the server IP address as shown in the following example.

You should also be able to access the following URL directly:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/auto/defstats.xml

Post March 02, 2020, the above webpage redirects to the following URL:

https://www.broadcom.com/avcenter/venc/auto/defstats.xml

Ensure the above outlined URL is accessible.
