Issue/Introduction

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Support Tool reports that SEMSRV is not running, or has experienced an error.

Resolution

The Endpoint Protection Manager relies on this service to run properly. There are a number of different underlying reasons which could cause this to occur. Typically this category of error will manifest itself by:
      • An inability to log into the Manager, as well as "Java -1" error entries in the Windows Event Viewer.
      • Attempting to start this service from the Windows services applet will result in it failing after a few moments

The first step in diagnosing this class of issue is to verify the errors found by the Support Tool, in particular -- ensure that there are no port conflicts on TCP 8005, 8443, 2638. These are the default ports used by the SEPM, applications attempting to use the ports configured for the Console will cause the service to fail, and bar use of the Management Console.
