Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine when launching Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager after recent Windows Update

Issue/Introduction

After installing one or all of the Microsoft Windows Updates in the Symptoms section below, you get an error when you try to launch the SEPM Console.





Symptoms
The following Security Updates may be installed:

  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB923561)
  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB956572)
  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB961373)
  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB952004)
  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB960803)
  • Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB959426)
  • Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Server 2003 (KB963027)


The error displayed when launching the SEPM Console



In some cases connecting to SEPM via the Remote Console may be possible, however in other cases this may not be possible, as the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Service could have crashed.

Cause

The issue was caused by changes that were made to the base address of Advapi.dll after installing Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Security Update MS09-012. Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;971812 for a description and details of the problem.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, please peruse Microsoft KB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;971812, obtain the appropriate Hotfix available as per the Operating System and Language in use, and download and install the Hotfix to resolve the issue.
