Issue/Introduction

While installing a Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client localy, the install rolls back with the following error: "The wizard was interrupted before Symantec Endpoint Protection could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again. Click Finish to exit the wizard." Installing LiveUpdate first then installing SEP does not allow install to complete.

Symptoms
Installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection fails. You look at the SEP_INST.log and you see reference to the following:

    Action 13:45:12: LU_Register_Decomposer_ABI.611D9A69_39FC_4998_998E_1ECADF28A979.
    MSI (s) (F0:FC) [13:45:12:718]: Executing op: CustomActionSchedule(Action=LU_Register_Decomposer_ABI.611D9A69_39FC_4998_998E_1ECADF28A979,ActionType=1025,Source=BinaryData,Target=_LURegisterDecomposerABI@4,)
    MSI (s) (F0:34) [13:45:12:718]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSIA1.tmp, Entrypoint: _LURegisterDecomposerABI@4
    -- DECABI_LOGGING -- Enter LURegisterDecomposerABI()
    -- DECABI_LOGGING -- LiveUpdate registration failed. (HRESULT=-2144731115)
    Action ended 13:45:13: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

Cause

Error "LiveUpdate registration failed. (HRESULT=-2144731115)" in SEP install log can be caused by improperly registered Microsoft COM object "IEnumVariant".

Resolution

  1. Please check to see if HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020404-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} subkey is missing in the registry. If it is, continue to next step. Otherwise, this KB article doesn't apply.
  2. Import the registry file attached.EnumVariant.reg
  3. If there is existing LiveUpdate, uninstall from Add/Remove programs.
  4. Reinstall SEP.

References
If the above mentioned registry subkey is missing after SEP installation, it can cause Error "LU 1805: Liveupdate was unable to find any products to update" when running LiveUpdate -> KB 2008030423541648 Database 'Enterprise Security', View 'Support\All Documents (CLF)', Document 'Error
