Symptoms
You do not see any pattern on the ocurrence of the issue
  • Re-Installing SEP does not help
  • Issue happens with:
    - Managed and Unmanaged SEP machines
    - Outlook 2003 and 2007
    - No Proxy in the network
    - SEP 11 MR3 (11.0.3001)
    - Auto-Protect enabled for Internet Email (POP/SMTP)
- You followed Microsoft recommendation but did not help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813514

Cause

The POP/SMTP connection cannot be scanned due to the likelihood of corrupted virus definitions or part of the virus engine. This is causing the error and the impossibility of the email being downloaded

Resolution

1. Download Intelligent Updater:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-SAVCE.html
2. Run the *.exe file (ie. 20080728-041- v5i32.exe) in the machine issued
3. Restart Outlook
4. Restart SEP service:
start > run > smc -stop
start > run > smc -start
