Issue/Introduction

You are installing Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager on Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003 SP1. You see the following error message: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library - Buffer Overrun Detected!"

Symptoms
Full text of the error message:

    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Buffer overrun detected!

    Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\CSCRIPT.EXE

    A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."

Resolution

This problem occurs if Microsoft Visual Basic Script Edition is not up to date on the computer. To solve the problem, update VBScript.

To update VBScript
  1. Download the Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000 from here.
  2. Install Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Install Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.
