Issue/Introduction

While attempting to install Symantec Mail Security for Domino you get the dialog box with the following text and an OK button: "Please Shut down your Lotus Domino server before installing this product" and installation is aborted.

Symptoms

Windows OS Installation:
During installation, the following message appears: "Please Shut down your Lotus Domino server before installing this product."

AIX installation:
Checking for SMSDOM whether it is installed ...

Checking for other SMSDOM installation processes ...

Checking for "avdefs" group id ...
The group "avdefs" does exist on this system.

Checking that Domino server is installed ...

Checking for Domino server running ...
Please shut down the Domino server before installing SMSDOM.
 

Resolution

Ensure that the Domino server is not running. Even if Domino is not running, still ensure that all Domino-related processes are no longer running.
 

On Windows OS:
If Domino is not running and the error still occurs, you may prevent Domino from loading at system start up and attempt a new installation.

1. Click Start > Run and type services.msc
2. Find Lotus Domino service and change from Automatic to Manual or Disabled.
3. Restart the machine.
4. Install Symantec Mail Security for Domino.
5. Click Start > Run and type services.msc
6. Find Lotus Domino service and change from Disabled or Manual back to Automatic.
7. Start domino manually or reboot and allow it to start on its own.

On Linux/Solaris/AIX:
Please make sure the following command doesn't return any results:

ps -ef | grep server
