Issue/Introduction

How to manually remove Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security 6.0.x for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server/ 2003 Server. 

Resolution

WARNING: In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it, because incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the registry keys that are specified. The following document explains how to back up the registry:

 

1.  Open a command prompt and enter the following commands:

net stop smsmse
net stop SAVFMSESpamStatsManager

sc delete smsmse
sc delete SAVFMSESpamStatsManager
 

 2. Unregister SMSMSE from LiveUpdate:

Open a command prompt on the computer where SMSMSE is installed and run the following command:

regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server\SAVFMSELU.dll"

3. Remove Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Web site in Internet Services Manager. 

a. Right click on My Computer and select Manage.
b. Open the tree item Services and Applications|Internet Information Services|Web Sites.
c. Right click on Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and select stop.
d. Right click on Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and select Delete.
e. Open the tree item Services and Applications|Internet Information Services|Application Pools.
f. Right click on SMSMSEAppPool and select stop.
g. Right click on SMSMSEAppPool and select Delete.
h. Open a command prompt and enter the following command:

iisreset

 4. Remove registry keys.

a. Exit all programs.
b. Open regedit and remove the following keys if they are present:

5. Remove folders.

            C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\definitions
            C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymcData\virusdefs32
            C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE
            C:\Program Files\Symantec\CMaF
 

       NOTE: These paths are the default locations; adjust the paths if you installed the program into a different location.                 

6. Delete Administration Console icon from desktop.

7. If applicable, also delete the SMSMSE shared settings folder on the cluster resource.

8. Remove the SMSMSE Admins and SMSMSE Viewers groups from the Active Directory.

  • This document applies to Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security 6.0.x for Microsoft Exchange when installed on Microsoft Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 only.
