This document contains the release notes for Symantec Mail Security 5.0.x for Microsoft Exchange in-line releases.
This document is written so that the most recent product builds are at the beginning of the document.

Symantec Mail Security 5.0.13.389 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
Several defects were fixed in the KeyView Filter component of the attachment content scanning module.
Solution:
Upgraded the KeyView Filter component to the latest available version.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.12.388 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
Several defects were fixed in the KeyView Filter component of the attachment content scanning module.
Solution:
Upgraded the KeyView Filter component to the latest available version.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.11.384 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
A blank subject content filtering rule triggers on a message with a multiline subject containing a blank line.
Solution:
Fixed.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.10.382 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
Several defects were fixed in the KeyView Filter component of the attachment content scanning module.
Solution:
Upgraded the KeyView Filter component to the latest available version.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.9.380 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
SMSMSE virus definitions periodically get corrupted in a Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (SAVCE)-managed client.
Solution:
If AV engine initialization fails, virus definitions will first attempt to get update from Symantec shared virus definition location. In case no good definition is available on the shared location, it will attempt to LiveUpdate, provided LiveUpdate is enabled in the system and the content license is valid.
Symptom:
Several defects were fixed in the KeyView Filter component of the attachment content scanning module.
Solution:
Upgraded the KeyView Filter component to the latest available version.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.8.376 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
Multiple defects were fixed in the KeyView Filter component.
Solution:
KeyView Filter component, which is used by attachment content filter module, has been upgraded to the latest available version.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.7.373 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
When trying to overinstall Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange from a CD, the installation fails with the message: “Please insert disk:1”
Solution:
A workaround is provided by editing the registry key settings to set the MEDIAPACKAGEPATH property to the relative path of current installation package.
Symptom:
Installation of Symantec Mail Security 5.0.7 for Microsoft Exchange fails if .NET 1.1 is not installed, even if .NET 2.0 is already installed.
Solution:
Before installing Symantec Mail Security 5.0.7 for Microsoft Exchange, please ensure that .NET 1.1, Service Pack 1, and .NET 2.0 is installed.
Symptom:
Installation of Symantec Mail Security 5.0.7 for Microsoft Exchange fails.
Solution:
During installation, .NET 2.0 is silently installed on the server.
Symptom:
When Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange is installed to a non-default directory, conduit.exe fails.
Solution:
Corrected in new build.
Symptom:
Decomposer fails when dealing with some container files in CAB format.
Solution:

Symptom:
Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange cannot scan IBM-DVA:VBS script file zipped by WinZip 11.

Symantec Mail Security 5.0.6.368 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
Some Microsoft DLL files that come with Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange are affected by the problem that Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-012 describes.
Read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 924667 for additional information on the problem.
Solution:
The update includes new versions of Atl71.dll and Mfc71u.dll. The new file versions are 7.10.5057.0.
Symptom:
Libspamhunter.dll causes Inetinfo.exe to fail.
Solution:
Updated a software component to avoid the problem.
Symptom:
Some email reports do not get sent in a Microsoft Cluster environment.
Solution:
Updated the software to correctly email the reports.
Symptom:
In some situations, Savfmsesjm.exe fails during a manual scan.
Solution:
Updated the software to avoid the failure.
Symptom:
When you reinstall Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange, some files do not appear in the global group. This can cause error messages to appear when you view certain pages in the global group.
Solution:
Updated the software to correctly display the missing pages.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.5.366 for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom:
When Premium AntiSpam is enabled, the IIS process terminates and restarts frequently.
Solution:
Updated the Premium AntiSpam component to resolve the problem. If you disabled Premium AntiSpam heuristic detection as a work-around for this problem, you should re-enable it after you upgrade.
Symptom:
Certain RAR files cause scans to time out.
Solution:
Updated the decomposer to resolve the problem.
Symptom:
Pie charts and line charts do not appear correctly on certain non-English operating systems.
Solution:
Updated the program to resolve the problem.
Symptom:
Violations from the file filtering rules incorrectly trigger Same Virus outbreak events.
Solution:
Updated product to avoid this problem.
Symptom:
If you configured internal domains, export and import of product settings generates an error and you cannot import the settings.
Solution:
Updated the product to correctly import the settings in these situations.
Symptom:
Deploy all settings does not deploy scheduled scans.
Solution:
Updated the product to correctly deploy scheduled scans.
Symptom:
If you move servers in the Asset Management view, the selected server does not get the group settings, even if you selected the "Send group settings to server" option.
Solution:
Updated the product to send group settings to the server when you use the "Send group settings to server" option.
Symptom:
Uninstallation procedure removes the Quarantine folder.
Solution:
Updated uninstallation procedure to retain Quarantine folder if there are quarantined files.
Symptom:
The user interface has options to use "equal" or "does not equal" evaluation when filtering message bodies. The product does not support these evaluations.
Solution:
Removed the unsupported evaluation options from the user interface. If you previously configured rules to filter message bodies with the "equal" or "does not equal" evaluation, those evaluations are invalid and you are asked to select new evaluations.
Symptom:
If you configured Outlook email clients to work in cache mode or to deliver email to personal folders, you cannot release quarantined email messages.
Solution:
You can now release messages that were quarantined from a system mailbox back to the sender.
Symptom:
If certain types of HTML-formatted message violate your filtering rules and you configured the product to replace the message body with clean message text, the product incorrectly processes them as unscannable messages and the SavfmseSp.exe process terminates.
Solution:
Updated the product to correctly replace the message body and avoid the process termination.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.4 (build 363) for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom: Re-installation of the software may remove the Symantec Mail Security Spam Statistics service. This action can cause error messages when you try to open the user interface.
Solution: Updated the re-installation procedure.
Symptom: The Multimedia File Rule and the Executable File Rule do not detect certain mp3 files and executable files.
Solution: Changed code to provide better detection by the Multimedia File Rule and the Executable File Rule.
Symptom: Certain clean Microsoft office files can cause false positive bloodhound virus detection.
Solution: Changed code to avoid this false positive detection when the bloodhound detection level is set to Medium or Low.
Symptom: Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange cluster resource causes the cluster service to stop functioning during service start-up. This problem occurs if you turn off one cluster node while restarting another node in a 2 node cluster configuration.
Solution: Changed code to permit proper start-up.
Symptom: SMSMSE Performance Counters "Bytes Scanned" and "Bytes scanned/Sec" do not work.
Solution: Fixed an error to correctly report the data in these Perfmon counters.
Symptom: Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange does not generate the list of mailboxes and public folders on a cluster when there are more than one network name resources in the cluster resource group that contains the Exchange virtual server resources.
Solution: Changed code to generate mailbox and public folder list correctly for this configuration.
Symptom: Internal sender notifications fail.
Solution: Fixed an error in sending internal sender notifications.
Symptom: Real-time Blacklist fails.
Solution: Fixed the error. The product also now checks the address that the DNS lookup returns against the blacklist. If the first octet of the return code is 127 the remote domain is determined to be on the blacklist.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.3 (build 360) for Microsoft Exchange
Enhancement: Support daily LiveUpdate of virus definitions.
Enhancement: Added a new match list for use by multimedia and executable file rules.
Enhancement: Automatically update the Active Directory Cache when Content Filter rules are edited or created.
Symptom: The report section: Spam By Category displays all 0's. Only spam domain starting with the letter "Z" are included.
Solution: Changed code to retrieve spam data in different order. This change allows the spam cache to initialize correctly.
Symptom: Attachment block does not catch attachments in inbound / outbound SMTP scans.
Solution: Change code to remove exclusion on certain internal Exchange folders.
Symptom: Report database fragmentation impacts performance of report generation.
Solution: Maintenance on report database occurs every 24 hours to defragment database.
Symptom: Changes to Content Filtering Notification setting do not show after a refresh.
Solution: Changed code to display changes correctly.
Symptom: RBL entries that cannot be resolved stop mail flow.
Solution: Updated logic to correct this problem.
Symptom: Cannot locate public folders when running Symantec Mail Security in a non-root domain.
Solution: Changed code to retrieve correct path to public folders.
Symptom: User interface crash on manual scan page.
Solution: Code change to perform checks to prevent this problem.
Symptom: Updating virus definitions through Symantec Corporate Edition causes corrupt messages in Event log.
Solution: Changed code to verify CSAPI definitions are old before updating.
Symptom: LiveUpdate catalog does not include Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange when only installing the console. This prevents LiveUpdate from functioning correctly.
Solution: Code changed to add SAVMSElu.dll to console only installation.
Symptom: Limit size of emailed report.
Solution: Added code to control maximum size of report to email to default size of 5 MB.
Symptom: Default Quarantine settings are set to delete oldest items after 1000.
Solution: Changed setting entry to 0.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.2 (build 221) for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom: Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange treats Exchange Mailbox Management detail reports as unscannable.
Solution: Provided a default attachment name in cases such as this so that CSAPI accepts the scan request as valid.
Symptom: Remote installation does not create Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange security groups.
Solution: Added custom action in InstallShield to create Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange security groups when you install from a Console-only environment.
Symptom: Contents of the unfiltered recipient lists and RBL fields on the whitelist or blacklist page can't be deleted.
Solution: Added code to allow deletion of items in the list.
Symptom: Messages in Event Log contain only error codes.
Solution: Added code to display text messages with the error codes.
Symptom: Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange treats some malformed MIME messages as unscannable (false positives).
Solution: Added code to no longer treat these messages as unscannable.
Symantec Mail Security 5.0.1 (build 208) for Microsoft Exchange
Symptom: Buffer overflow vulnerability when decomposing RAR archives
Solution: Updated CSAPI.
