Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

When you view quarantined items in the user interface for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange only the first 1000 items are viewable.

Conditions

  • There are more than one thousand items in the quarantine on the file system.

1. Open Windows explorer to the quarantine folder on the file system.

            32-bit Operating Systems:  c:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Quarantine
            64-bit Operating Systems: c:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Quarantine

NOTE: These paths are the default installation paths. They may be different if the product was installed in a different location.  Replace <version> with the version of SMSMSE installed.

Here is an example for 6.5 on a 32-bit operating system:

c:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.5\Server\Quarantine

2. If the number of .Q files in the directory is greater than 1000 then this condition is met.

Cause

The default setting for the maximum number of quarantined items displayed is 1000.

Resolution

Symantec is aware of this limitation. This article is updated as more information is available.  Subscribe to this article to receive updates.

Workaround

Use one of the workarounds below:

  • Modify the registry to increase the number of Quarantine items displayed:

To edit the QuarantineDisplayLimitDWord registry value

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.
    1. Exit all open programs.
    2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
    3. In the Run dialog box, type the following:

      regedit
    4. Click OK.
      The Registry Editor opens.
    5. Double click the following registry key to open the value dialog box:

      32-bit operating system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Components\Quarantine\QuarantineDisplayLimitDWord
      64-bit operating system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Components\Quarantine\QuarantineDisplayLimitDWord

NOTE:  Replace <version> with the version of SMSMSE installed.  The following is an example for SMSMSE installed on a 64 bit operating system:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.5\Server\Components\Quarantine\QuarantineDisplayLimitDWord

    6. Under Base, click Decimal.
    7. In the Value Data text box type the new maximum number of quarantined items that you want to see.
    8. Close the Registry Editor window.

Note: If you increase the QuarantineDisplayLimitDWord value too much, you may see ASP timeout error messages when you view the quarantined items.
  • Move files in and out of the Quarantine folder.
    1. Move all files that end in .Q from the quarantine directory (see above) to a temporary directory. Do not move any other files or directories.
    2. Then move 1000 files back into the directory.
    3. Refresh the console Quarantine view.
    4. After processing the quarantine items continue with step #2 with remaining files.
