Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange has quarantined mails due to content or virus policies. You need to release files from Quarantine, and you need to know where they will be restored.

Resolution

The local quarantine files are stored in a Quarantine directory. The default location of this directory for Symantec Exchange products is:

Symantec Mail Security 5.x for Exchange:
<Drive:>Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\5.0\Server\Quarantine

Symantec Mail Security 6.x for Exchange:
<Drive:>Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server\Quarantine

Symantec Mail Security 6.5 for Exchange:
<Drive:>Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.5\Server\Quarantine

Note: It is important that this Quarantine directory is not scanned by the AntiVirus product defending the Exchange server's file system. For more information, see Configuring exclusions when Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition are installed together.

You can release messages from the local quarantine by using the following options:

  • Release Quarantined Messages to a File
Files that you "Release To File System" are released to the "<Drive>:\. . .\Quarantine\Release" directory.
  • Release Quarantined Messages by Mail
You can send quarantined files to specified destinations by email. When you release a file from the quarantine by email, you remove it from the quarantine. The released email is then sent with revised sender information to the recipients specified in the "to" box. Rather than being sent from the original sender's email address, it is sent from the email account that you specify on the Notification Settings page. The email is not delivered to the recipients specified in the "Cc" or "Bcc" fields.

Note: In SMSMSE 6.5.5 and earlier, messages that are released from the quarantine are rescanned for threats. If your virus policy is to quarantine threats, Mail Security returns the message to the quarantine.

Messages released from the quarantine are not filtered for spam or content filtering.
