KNOWN ISSUE: Discovery tasks fail immediately with error ''An unknown exception was thrown''

Issue/Introduction

When running a Network Discovery task, it fails immediately with the following details:

    

An unknown exception was thrown.

System.Runtime.InteropServices.SEHException: External component has thrown an exception. at Altiris.DiscoveryTasks.DiscoverTask.OnExecute(IServerTaskExecutionInstance instance) at Altiris.TaskManagement.ServerTasks.BaseServerTask.OnExecute(ITaskExecutionEngine engine, IServerTaskExecutionInstance instance, TaskInstanceRequest request) at Altiris.TaskManagement.ServerTasks.BaseServerTask.Execute(ITaskExecutionEngine engine, IBaseTaskExecutionInstance instance, TaskInstanceRequest request) at Altiris.TaskManagement.Common.Execution.Engine.TaskEngineExecutionThread.ExecuteTaskHandler()

Cause

This condition may occur if a repair has been run on "Altiris Pluggable Protocol Architecture" within the Symantec Installation Manager.

This is a known issue and has been submitted to development.

Resolution

If the Symantec Management Platform has been installed to a path which is not the default (e.g. E:\Altiris) and a repair has been run on "Altiris Pluggable Protocol Architecture", follow these steps:

1. Modify the following registry values to point to the proper installation path of the Pluggable Protocols:
    
        HKLM\Software\Altiris\PluggableProtocols\BinariesPath
        HKLM\Software\Altiris\PluggableProtocols\ConfigPath
    
   Example:  If Altiris has been installed to: "E:\Altiris", then these values should be:
    
        BinariesPath:  E:\Altiris\Pluggable Protocols Agent\bin
        ConfigPath:  E:\Altiris\Pluggable Protocols Agent\bin\Config
    
2. Either reboot the Notification Server, or run "iisreset" and restart all the Altiris Server services
    

This issue has been addressed by development and will be resolved in Pluggable Protocol Architecture SP4.
