Issue/Introduction

When trying to start the Altiris Service, a System.Net.Remoting error is logged with the following detail:

Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted.

Cause

The exact cause is unknown.

A race condition is suspected in the OS and network stack or NIC drivers

Resolution

There are two possible workarounds:

  • Put quotes around the ImagePath value in the registry for the AltirisClientMsgDispatcher service
  • Reboot the server and allow the Altiris Service to start up at boot

If these do not resolve the issue, please contact Microsoft Support Services.

The service on this specific system would always start on boot. The error would only happen when stopping and starting the Altiris Service after a system boot.

The port that the Altiris Service was trying to acquire, 4010, was not listed as in use by either netstat or TCPView.
