Error, "Error 1721 . . . A program required for this install to complete could not be run"

Issue/Introduction

Attempting to install a Notification Server update hangs. Terminating the process causes the error message:

Error 1721. There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Cause

A service or application running on the Notification Server is preventing a successful completion of the CheckTimeouts.cs script file.

Resolution

After stopping the installation, perform the following tasks to finish the installation outside of the normal install path.

For Update 35803:

1. First run the CheckTimeOuts.cs script file to make sure all necessary time out settings are updated:
   
   "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin\NScript.exe" "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Updates\35803\v6.0.708.0\CheckTimeOuts.cs"
   
   
2. Second perform the configuration of the update to complete the installation:
   
   "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin\aexconfig.exe" /configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Updates\35803\v6.0.708.0\HotFixConfig.config"

For Update 39159, you will need to change the folder locations to be \39159\v6.0.809.0.

Note:These steps assume that you've installed the Notification Server to the default location.
