Issue/Introduction

Microsoft Office Updates are failing with 1642 errors. The logs show the error but don't give any more details.

Running the patch manually produces the message: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by Windows Installer because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch upgrade,  or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

Cause

In the add/remove programs under the Microsoft Office Professional 2003 component were two subcomponents. One of which was "Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter KB931764 - OUTLFLTR". This appears to have been the cultprit.

Resolution

Uninstalling the "Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter KB931764 - OUTLFLTR" update, allowed the patches to install.
