Issue/Introduction

During the installation of the Deployment Solution for Dell 3.0, you receive the following error message:

Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Cause

Collect the installation logs from the %TEMP% folder on the server in which you're trying to install the product on. They'll start with MSI and then a number and .log

In this case, the error looked like the following:

Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.  Custom action Rename_Dell_DIR script error -2146828218, Microsoft VBScript runtime error: Permission denied Line 21, Column 2,
=== Logging stopped: 1/14/2008  15:56:30 ===

In this case, the installation wasn't able to rename the existing Dell folder to perform the installation.

Resolution

Just rebooting the computer resolves this issue. It will release the in use Dell folder which, in turn will allow the folder to be renamed and the product to install.

If this does not work, remove the registry entry for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products for the GUID showing the Deployment Solution for Dell Servers under the ProductName. Then reboot the server before trying to run the Deployment Solutions for Dell Servers installer again.
