Issue/Introduction

Shortly after installing Notification Server 6.0 SP3 R5 to a new Windows* 2003 Enterprise server, the following errors start to occur:

Priority: 1
Date: 9/18/2007 12:28:26 PM
Tick Count: 94004859
Host Name: <servername>
Process: w3wp.exe (3144)
Thread ID: 3264
Module: AltirisNativeHelper.dll
Source: Altiris.AlertManager.SqlHelper
Description: General network error.  Check your network documentation. sp_getmanagedobjectsource

Cause

Theory 1: It is a Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 server and some of the Altiris solutions are older versions and not compatible with R2 SP2.

Theory 2: There are two I386 folders on the server after IIS was installed. The I386 folder that was created during the operating system install was not slip-streamed and did not include the SP2 patches. The second I386 folder was created with the installation of IIS and was slip-streamed and included the R2 SP2 patches.

Theorgy 3: The server was configured with the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file and it was running out of system memory, limiting the total number of Page Table Entries that were available.  For more information see KB article 25079 (Understanding the /3GB, /USERVA, and Free Page Table Entries).

Note: All OS Windows Component installations should be done from similar media.

Resolution

Added the /USERVA switch into the boot.ini and attachments could then be added to Helpdesk.
