Issue/Introduction

When installing the Microsoft Credential Provider plug-in there is a window in the wizard that asks to browse to the configuration file. When clicking "Browse" nothing happens and installation cannot continue.

No error messages are shown, however, the explorer window does not open to browse to the file so installation cannot continue.

Cause

This issue can occur if the required Visual C++ components are not installed. Please note the following requirements for Microsoft Credential Provder

For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008:

• Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86 Redistributable (for 32-bit operating system)
• Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x64 Redistributable (for 64-bit operating system)

For Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2:

• Visual C++ 2012 x86 Update 4 Redistributable (for 32-bit operating system)
• Visual C++ 2012 x64 Update 4 Redistributable (for 64-bit operating system)

For the latest Credential Provider version (1.4)

Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 32-bit Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable X86
Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 64-bit Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable X64
Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022 64-bit Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable X64

Resolution

Download and install the applicable version of Visual C++ from the Microsoft website using the links below:

Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 (x86/x64)

Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)

Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022
