Keep in mind that system requirements are the minimum resources for installing DLP 15.x and not for a production environment; these guidelines do not account for server application and OS resource requirements.
The following note was extracted from the Symantec™ Data Loss Prevention Network Monitor and Prevent Performance Sizing Guidelines:

"Although memory configurations are listed, be aware that Network Prevent for Email performance is primarily CPU-bound, not memory-bound."

According to the same document, Network Prevent for Email can process 88 emails/sec in a VM container with 8-core VM and 8 message chains with a .26 sec latency.
