Protection for SharePoint Servers

Issue/Introduction

Symantec Protection for Sharepoint Servers (SPSS) 6.0.9 & later comes bundled with Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) 7.9.2.  The SPSS product installs to Sharepoint and communicates with SPE to complete malware scan requests.  Part of the initial installation process requires you to install a license to SPE.

When attempting to license Symantec Protection Engine 7.9.2 through the user interface an error is returned:

Resolution

You can work-around this error by utilizing one of the options listed below:

For installations of Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) to Windows:

  1. If SPE is installed as part of the SPSS installer the license file will be successfully ingested without generating an error.
  2. If this is a stand-alone installation of SPE outside of the SPSS installer you must take the following steps after installing SPE.

a. Stop the Symantec Protection Engine (symcscan) service.
b. Copy the provided license (slf) file to: C:\ProgramData\Symantec Shared\Licenses
c. Start the Symantec Protection Engine (symcscan) service.

For installation of Symantec Protection Engine (SPE) to Linux:

(Note: Default installation path:  /opt/SYMCScan/bin)

  1. Stop the Symantec Protection Engine (symcscan) service.   /<default path>/symcscan.sh stop
  2. Copy the provided license (slf) file to: /opt/Symantec/Licenses/
  3. Start the Symantec Protection Engine (symcscan) service.  /<default path>/symcscan.sh start
