High battery usage displayed for Endpoint Protection Mobile for iOS

Issue/Introduction

iOS device is displaying high battery usage for Symantec Endpoint Protection Mobile (SEP Mobile)

Environment

SEP Mobile with Web Protection feature on (see Block unwanted network content with Endpoint Protection Mobile)

Resolution

Battery usage statistics in iOS settings are calculated using an algorithm that considers multiple factors including the radio or the cellular data usage that an app initiates.

When the Web Protection feature in SEP Mobile is enabled, it monitors all the Internet traffic on the device. Since SEP Mobile touches each network packet originating from any app that accesses Internet, iOS attributes the total Internet access time by any app to SEP Mobile. This behavior results in inappropriately high battery usage being attributed to SEP Mobile in Battery usage statistics. The actual battery usage by SEP Mobile is far less than what is displayed.
