Drive Encryption Endpoint Encryption

You are unable to encrypt a removable drive using Encryption Desktop drive encryption. After selecting the drive, the Encrypt button is disabled and the following message is displayed:

Removable storage media is managed by SEE Removable Storage or Removable Media Encryption and can't be encrypted by Symantec Drive Encryption

  • Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2 MP13 and above.
  • Symantec Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption 11.0 and above.

By design, if Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption is installed, it will manage all removable media.

If you do not want Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption to manage the removable drive then please do the following:

  1. Uninstall Endpoint Encryption.
  2. Encrypt the removable drive with Encryption Desktop drive encryption. If Encryption Desktop is showing that the drive is removable but it is actually a fixed drive, please see  article TECH233573.
  3. Install Endpoint Encryption.
  4. Copy a file to the encrypted removable drive and confirm that Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption does not encrypt the file.
