Issue/Introduction

After upgrading the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), users are experiencing unexpected restart requests at the SEP clients. But only the SEPM was upgraded, and there were no changes to any upgrade packages assigned to client groups in the SEPM.

"The Symantec Endpoint Protection installation requires this computer to restart" pop-up at clients.

Cause

Part of the cause may be an existing upgrade package assigned to client group in the SEPM, even though that package is the same version already installed on the client and should not be triggering an upgrade or restart request.

Resolution

This issue has been fixed in version 14.2 RU1 MP1.

You can work around / prevent this unexpected restart request by:

  • Removing any existing upgrade package assignments in SEPM client groups
  • Make sure that any "auto-upgrade" package assigned are using and have checked the checkbox for the default setting of "Maintain existing client features when upgrading”
  • Ensuring that any packages that are or using one of the techniques described in How to temporarily stop AutoUpgrade from continuing.
