The target principal name is incorrect. Error: Cannot generate SSPI context

Issue/Introduction

Symantec Management Platform (SMP).

When trying to access the Symantec Management Console it becomes inaccessible.

In Altiris Log viewer we see the following error message as "SQL Connection Failed: The target principal name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context".

Environment

SMP 8.x

Cause

The application pool identity is unable to authenticate.
The account used for the application pool is locked out.

Resolution

Do the following:

1. Log into the Server and open IIS manager
2. Navigate to the application pool hosting the Web application throwing the error
3. Change or Update the application pool identity
4. Restart IIS
