Environment

Patching of Java 8 through Altiris Patch Management Solution

Resolution

Starting from the April 16, 2019 quarterly critical patch update, Oracle commercial users can get Java SE 8 updates through My Oracle Support or via auto update for a longer period.

Patch Management Solution supports deployment of non-public updates for Oracle Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) starting from JRE 8u211.

Before you enable a software update policy, consider the following:

  • You must manually add a binary file of the corresponding update to the policy distribution package because Oracle requires login for downloading Java SE Runtime Environment 8 files.
  • In hierarchy, you must manually add a binary file of the corresponding update to the policy distribution package on each child Notification Server.

To configure Software Update Policy for Java SE Runtime Environment 8:

  1. In the Symantec Management Console, on the Home menu, click Patch Management.
  2. In the left pane, under Patch Management, expand Windows, and under Software Updates, click Bulletins and Updates.
  3. In the right pane, right-click the bulletin for Java SE Runtime Environment 8 that you want to update with an installation file, and then click Distribute Packages.

  4. In the Distribute Software Updates wizard, click Step 2, ensure that the software update policy is disabled, and then click Distribute software updates.

  5. On the Creating Software Update Policy page of the wizard, click the policy name next to Software Update Policy.

  6. To add the appropriate EXE installation file for Java SE Runtime Environment 8 version x64 to the policy distribution package, perform the following steps in order:

6.1. Download the necessary installation files for the required version of Java SE Runtime Environment 8.
Note: Download the files with the names that you see on the Software Update Policy page.
For example, on the page Java SE Runtime Environment 8 Downloads, you can download update files for the versions 8u211 and 8u212 (select EXE binaries suitable for offline installation).

6.2 On the Software Update Policy page, on the Advanced tab, under Package, click the package name.

6.3. On the Patch Management Software Update Package page, on the Package tab, under Package location, find the package location.

6.4. Open the package location on the Notification Server computer.

6.5. Navigate to the location of the appropriate Java Installation file and ensure that the file name is the same as Package Name with EXE extension.
For example, if the package name is jre-8u211-windows-x64.txt, the Java installation file should be jre-8u211-windows-x64.exe.

6.6. Copy and paste the Java installation file to the package location.

6.7. On the Patch Management Software Update Package page, on the Package tab, click Update Distribution Points, and then close the page.

  1. (Optional) To add appropriate installation files for other Java SE Runtime Environment 8 architectures, repeat the procedure in Step 6.
  2. On the Software Update Policy page, enable the policy.
At the upper right of the page, click the colored circle, and then click On.
  3. Click Save changes.
