Issue/Introduction

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 14.2 Firewall component is malfunctioning after upgrade.

Resolution

The error code 0x80070005 (ACCESS DENIED) is being returned from Microsoft's standard API call to install Network Components.  This is a generic driver installation failure. This installation process is handled by the Operating System (OS).  In this case it appears Check Point Endpoint Security VPN is the culprit and blocking the installation.  Please contact Check Point support for further assistance or perform the workaround below.

Workaround:

  1. Remove SEP via Cleanwipe
  2. Remove Check Point Endpoint Security VPN
  3. Install SEP 14.2 MP1 and restart the OS
  4. Reinstall Check Point Endpoint Security VPN
