Issue/Introduction

A migration to 14.2 or 14.2 MP1 has been rolled out in a Mac environment. On the systems that have performed their post-install reboot, a kernel panic may result. This may not impact all Macs that have been upgraded.

The panic logs make reference to our new SymXIPS.kext in 14.2

Cause

There is a race condition caused by a kernel extension initialization issue which causes the kernel panic.

Environment

Endpoint Protection for Mac 14.2 and 14.2 MP1

OS X 10.13.3 through 10.13.6

Resolution

On October 31, 2018, Symantec released a content update for the Intrusion Protection component. The Vulnerability Protection definitions containing this update show as Friday, October 26, 2018 r01 in the user interface. This content provides an update to the SymXIPS kernel extension. As a result this update does require a restart to load the updated kernel extension. The restart is not forced on end users and Macs will remain protected prior to the restart with the original kernel extension.
