Issue/Introduction

Packages are failing to install using <http://<packageservername>/Altiris/PS/getpackagesnapshot.asp?PackageId={CE0805C9-450C-4F32-A187-96881EE8E42F}&compress=1>. Getting error: HTTP Request failed. The operation completed successfully.

Cause

When the Altiris Agent was installed, the operating system converted the path to the program files\altiris\altiris agent into 8.3 format (progra~1\altiris\altiris~1). This path flowed down into the file system and IIS when the Package Server agent was installed.

If the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\InstallDir path is never corrected, any subsequent PS Agent upgrades will cause the problem to reoccur.

This error can be caused by extra backslashes which breaks IIS. When the Agent requests GetPackageSnapshot it gets a 404 error.

Resolution

  1. Modify the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\InstallDir path in correct format. If this path is not fixed any subsequent PS Agent upgrades will cause the problem to reoccur.
  2. Modify the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Package Server\PackageServerBaseDir path in correct format. This is the base location that the PS agent uses to build the Virtual Directories in IIS. If you just fixed the vdirs in IIS, they will revert back.
  3. Modify the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Plugin Objects\Agents\Package Server\InstallPath path to correct format.
  4. Modify the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Plugin Objects\Agents\Package Server\UninstallString path to correct format.
  5. Reregister the AeXNSCPackageServer.dll - (regsvr32 pathtoAeXNSCPackageServer.dll)
  6. Modify the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\shares\PkgSvrHostx$ path to correct format.
  7. Stop IIS
  8. Fix the Altiris and PS virtual directory paths in IIS to be in normal format.
  9. Delete the package.xml and snapshot.xml files from all packages.
  10. Delete the PS virtual directory
  11. Restart the computer.
  12. Open the Altiris Agent UI - Package Server tab and force a "Refresh Packages"
