Error: "The action can't be completed..." when copying a file to a network share

  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 14 holds a file open on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) fileshare
  • Users are not able to make any changes to the file

You get the following error when you try to overwrite or delete EXE or DLL files:

"The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.  Close the folder or file and try again."


This is a known issue with the Application Hardening feature in SEP versions 14 RU1 MP2 through SEP 14.2


Symantec Endpoint Protection 14 RU1 MP2 to 14.2


This issue will likely be fixed in SEP 14.2 MP1 

Please upgrade Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) and SEP clients to this newer version or reinstall SEP without Application Hardening

NOTE: Simply turning off Application Hardening will not resolve the issue
