Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

After upgrading to Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) to version 7.9 and later, virus definitions are no longer staying up to date automatically.

Cause

The mechanism SMSMSE uses to update virus definitions has been updated, and the method to configure proxy settings has changed.

Environment

A proxy server is configured to filter HTTP traffic.

Resolution

To configure HTTP settings for LiveUpdate and RapidRelease definitions

Note: In the paths below, replace <version> with the version of SMSMSE that is installed.

  1. Navigate to the installation directory and run PassKeyTool.exe.
    Default location C:\Program Files\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Config\PassKeyTool.exe
  2. Type a passkey and click Submit. This passkey is specified by the administrator and is used simply to seed the hash for the password specified later, the string does not matter.
  3. Open the proxy configuration tool.
    Default location C:\Program Files\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Config\ConfigureProxy.exe
  4. In the Configure Live Update Settings dialog box, specify the protocol as HTTP.
  5. In the Server box, type liveupdate.symantec.com.
  6. In the Port box, type the port number. Typically, the port number for HTTP is 80.
  7. Select Enable Proxy Settings.
  8. In the URL box, type the IP address of the HTTP proxy server.
Note that the usage of a host name is not supported, this must contain the IP address of the proxy server.
  9. In the Port box, type the port number of proxy server.
  10. If user authentication is enabled for proxy server, provide a user name and password.
  11. Click Submit.

If any issues occur with passkey.exe

  1. Open the Registry editor (Start  -> Run, regedit)
  2. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Cmaf\<version>"
  3. Right Click and create new key name "Info". After the key is created the path would be like "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Cmaf\<version>\Info"
  4. Create new string entry name "Info1" under this key. Set the value to some passkey; e.g. "[email protected]"
  5. Open the proxy configuration tool.
    Default location C:\Program Files\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Config\ConfigureProxy.exe
  6. In the Configure Live Update Settings dialog box, specify the protocol as HTTP.
  7. In the Server box, type liveupdate.symantec.com.
  8. In the Port box, type the port number. Typically, the port number for HTTP is 80.
  9. Select Enable Proxy Settings.
  10. In the URL box, type the IP address of the HTTP proxy server.
Note that the usage of a host name is not supported, this must contain the IP address of the proxy server.
  11. In the Port box, type the port number of proxy server.
  12. If user authentication is enabled for proxy server, provide a user name and password.
  13. Click Submit.
