Issue/Introduction

The status of any task does not update on SMP (Symantec Management Platform) server, there are no NSEs present in Event Queue folder. All the required Altiris services were started on Symantec Management Platform (SMP) server.

Warning in SMP logs:

Task execution engine failed
Failed to construct DatabaseContext object. Connection to database failed.
SQL connection failed, current user=DOMAIN\USERNAME

Environment

ITMS 8.x

Cause

SQL Server Browser service and SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service was stopped on the off-box SQL server.

Resolution

Below steps on SQL Database server fixed the error:

1. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
2. Select SQL Server Services.
3. Start SQL Server Browser service & SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service.

If the following error appears, apply the next steps below:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or it has no enabled devices associated with it. (0x80070422)

1. The Start Mode of this service will be 'Disabled'. Change it to Automatic under Service tab and then the service gets started.
2. Then start the IIS service on SMP server.
3. Now the SQL connection warning will not appear in logs. The status of the task will also start to appear in the Altiris logs and SMP console.
