Issue/Introduction

How to manually update the Virus and Spyware definitions content included with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 14 client installation packages exported from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

Resolution

Prerequisites

This procedure requires an exported client package for the version of Windows you are installing to. If you are installing to both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows computers, you will need exported client installation packages for both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of the SEP client.

You will also need copies of the latest Virus and Spyware definitions content from your Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

Locating the latest Virus and Spyware definitions content

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the SEPMs ...\inetpub\content folder.  The default path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\inetpub\content
  2. Open the folder named after the corresponding client moniker associated with the content you wish to update:

    • 64-bit computers (for use with dark network client) SEPC Virus Definitions SDS Win64 (n64) 14.3 RU6
      • {03C768A9-0A43-296F-7E43-B8D4A06DF12D}
    • 64-bit computers (for use with standard and reduced-size client installation packages) SEPC Virus R Definitions SDS Win64 (n64) 14.3 RU6
      • {0F36F5AD-0A43-296F-7E43-B8D47066787B}

  3. Open the folder with the latest modified date.
  4. Locate the full.zip file inside this folder.

Note:  Please review the Additional Information section below for older versions Monikers

Updating the client package

for Standard OR Embedded/VDI client

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the folder containing the installation files (if you are using a single .exe package, you’ll need to rename the .exe extension to .zip and extract the installation files to a folder before proceeding).
  2. Delete V3Defs.zip file from the folder.
  3. Copy the full.zip from the manager into the folder containing the installation files.
  4. Rename the copy of the full.zip to V3Defs.zip.

for Dark network client:

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the folder containing the installation files (if you are using a single .exe package, you’ll need to rename the .exe extension to .zip and extract the installation files to a folder before proceeding).
  2. Delete V15Defs.zip file from the folder.
  3. Copy the full.zip from the manager into the folder containing the installation files.
  4. Rename the copy of the full.zip to V15Defs.zip.

You can use the updated installation package with whatever deployment method you normally use to install SEP clients in your environment.

Additional Information

Please note that the procedure listed above contains monikers that are from 14.3.RU6 version if you have a older SEP client version you need to trace the correct moniker for the client installation type, version of software and OS.

This can be checked in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\inetpub\content\ContentInfo.txt file. For example for RU5 or RU6 dark network clients we have entries:

  • {67F66706-F04B-4432-9947-F8354949D2A6}: SEPC Virus R Definitions SDS Win64 (x64) 14.2 RU2 - MicroDefsB.CurDefs - SymAllLanguages

Therefore files from this moniker should be used.
