Issue/Introduction

Upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 14 MP2  fails due to the side-by-side configuration error, the upgrade of the SEPM rolls back because it fails to install LiveUpdate properly.

In the log %TEMP%\SEPM_Inst.log the error message just before the line "Return value : 3" is something like:

Generate Activation Context failed for "C:\PROGRA~2\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE".  Syntax error in manifest or policy file.

Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested:

  1. C:\PROGRA~2\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST. component
  2. C:\PROGRA~2\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\Microsoft.VC90.CRT.MANIFEST.

When you are trying to install LiveUpdate manually you may get the error "Install Error: 10, The LiveUpdate install failed because LiveUpdate was not able to register one of it's components. You need to have write access to the registry to install LiveUpdate"

Cause

The computer doesn't have the correct C++ runtime components installed for the system architecture.

Resolution

  1. Download and run VC++ Redistributable 2008 SP1.
  2. Uninstall LiveUpdate from the control panel\Program & Features, if LiveUpdate doesn't appear among the installed application you can follow this procedure:
    1. Open a command prompt as administrator
    2. Go to the folder c:\Program Files(x86)\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    3. Launch the command "Lsetup /u" to uninstall LiveUpdate
  3. Once LiveUpdate is uninstalled delete the folder c:\Program Files(x86)\Symantec\LiveUpdate.
  4. Locate the installation files of SEP 14 MP2 and execute Lusetup.exe in the SEPM folder to reinstall LiveUpdate.
  5. Once LiveUpdate is installed successfully you can relaunch the upgrade of the SEPM.
