Issue/Introduction

The Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) is a chip on the S500, S400, and S200 series motherboards that supports the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) specification.

The BMC controls and monitors hardware-related information such as temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, etc.

The ability to upgrade the BMC firmware has been added to hardware diagnostics version 3.1.2.1 or later for S-Series appliances.

Resolution

Upgrading the BMC firmware with the hardware diagnostics upgrade bmc command takes either 3 or 30 minutes to complete depending on the S-Series model:

Model BMC Upgrade Time
S500 3 minutes
 S400  3 minutes
S200 30 minutes

NOTE: The BMC firmware is embedded in hardware diagnostics version 3.1.2.1 or later, i.e. there is no separate BMC firmware to download.

NOTE: Any hardware diagnostic test or show commands, e.g. "test disk", "test memory", "show environment" etc, should be issued BEFORE upgrading the BMC firmware.

Immediately after upgrading the BMC firmware, it is necessary to exit the diagnostics and cold power cycle the appliance.

REQUIREMENTS:
Upgrading the hardware diagnostics and BMC firmware requires the following:

  • A serial connection.
  • Physical access to the appliance to do a cold power cycle.

OVERVIEW OF PROCESS:

  1. Download the updated hardware diagnostics version provided in the table near the beginning of this article.
  2. Refer to the product-specific installation instructions and host the updated hardware diagnostics code on a local web server if it's required.
Appliance Steps
  1. Install the updated hardware diagnostics code.
  2. From a serial connection restart the appliance and boot into the hardware diagnostics.
Hardware Diagnostics Steps
  1. Upgrade the BMC firmware.
  2. Exit hardware diagnostics.
Physical Appliance Steps
  1. Cold power cycle the appliance by disconnecting power cords and waiting 30 seconds.
  2. Reconnect power cords to power up the appliance.

For additional information on hardware diagnostics, refer to the Hardware Diagnostics" section in the S-Series Maintenance and Upgrade Guide
