Issue/Introduction

A VAP module produces a crash and the EIP (32bit mode instruction pointer register) or RIP (64bit mode instruction pointer register) points to something similar to the following:

RIP; <ffffffff8848d6e8 [cbs_pci_dp8650]__netag_put_data+978>

Other Out Of Memory killer activity may not necessarily be seen in the logs.

Cause

The kernel was attempting to allocate memory, but none was available, thus resulting in the panic crash.

Resolution

Monitor memory utilization using the cbs_meminfo script which is available here: Memory information collection script (cbs_meminfo.pl)

Additionally, you may also enable other memory leak detection utilities.
