Issue/Introduction

Cannot change the admin passwordWhen trying to change the password though the XOS CLI, you see the following RPC failed error:

test# config reset-password admin
Password:
Retype password:
%SYS-ERR: RPC failed
Detail: RPC: Timed out

Cause

An existing process can prevent an administrator from changing the admin password either through the CLI or Unix command passwd. In some cases, the mechanism for releasing the lock on the lock file using a Linux function is not executed and the lock file /etc/.pwd.lock is still attached to a process.

Resolution

N/A

Workaround

To release the locked file

1.   Determine the process that holds the lock file by executing the following Linux command:

     [[email protected] admin]# lsof +d /etc
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
     login 2220 root 3w REG 3,7 0 193975 /etc/.pwd.lock
     dhcpd 21812 root 4r REG 3,7 1358 291807 /etc/dhcpd.conf

2.   Kill the locking process manually with the kill command.

After killing the process, you should be able to change the password either through the CLI or Unix command.
