To release the locked file
1. Determine the process that holds the lock file by executing the following Linux command: [[email protected] admin]# lsof +d /etc
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
login 2220 root 3w REG 3,7 0 193975 /etc/.pwd.lock
dhcpd 21812 root 4r REG 3,7 1358 291807 /etc/dhcpd.conf
2. Kill the locking process manually with the kill
After killing the process, you should be able to change the password either through the CLI or Unix command.
