Issue/Introduction

How-to-properly-shutdown-X-series-chassisYou are required to power down the X-Series chassis and you want to do it gracefully.

Cause

This article highlights the need of properly shutting down the Blue Coat X-Series chassis.

Removing the power cords before graceful shutdown may have negative impact on moving parts (hard drives) and lead to corruption of data stored on the disks or to other kind of malfunction, and therefore should be avoided.

Resolution

To shutdown the X-series system gracefully, use the "shutdown" CLI command. Here is the output from the console port:

CBS# shutdown

Any unsaved configuration will be lost.
Do you want to save it to startup-config? <Y or N>[Y]: Y

Proceed with shutdown? <Y or N>[Y]: Y

Broadcast message from root (Thu Oct  3 19:24:48 2013):

All CLI sessions will be terminated!

Turning off swap:
Unmounting file systems:
Halting system...
Power down.

It is safe at this point to remove power from the X-series chassis.
