Issue/Introduction

Describes how to completely remove the content of a disk by erasing the partition table.

Cause

You may need to erase the content from a hard disk prior to shipping the disk back to Crossbeam. Use the following procedure to completely erase the content from a hard disk.

Resolution

Use the following procedure to completely erase the content from a hard disk.

1. Go to CPM root shell level
# unix su

2. Erase content of the hard drive

# Warning: There are no additional confirmation messages once command is run; all the content of the disk will be lost.

[[email protected] admin]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<disk>

where disk is:
/dev/sda
or
/dev/sdb

Depending on the size of the drive, it may take a few minutes as it overwrites each sector of the drive with zeros.

In the same way, the content of the HDD attached to APM might be erased/filled with zeros when run from VAP root shell level.
